What are your TRSL benefits?

Every payday, you and your employer each contribute a percentage of your salary to TRSL. These contributions make you a member of TRSL and are an investment in your future. Membership entitles you to survivor benefits for your family in the event of your death, disability retirement benefits if you become disabled, or your retirement benefits and periodic cost-of-living adjustments in retirement.

TRSL is a defined benefit plan, which means that benefit payments are not determined by the amount of your contributions, but rather by your age, years of service, and final average compensation (highest three years of consecutive earnings).

Members of TRSL belong to one of three retirement plans: the Regular Plan for teachers, or Plans A or B for school food service employees. See Membership for more information. Each plan has slight differences in retirement eligibility requirements and benefits.

Regular Plan and Plan A members do not contribute to the old-age portion of Social Security and may be subject to offsets by the Social Security Administration in retirement if eligible for Social Security benefits through other employment and receiving a TRSL pension. For more information, see the Social Security page of this website or the Social Security Administration's website pages devoted to government employees. Regular Plan and Plan A members who were employed after April 1, 1986, contribute to Medicare and are eligible for Medicare.

Plan B members do contribute to the old-age portion of Social Security and become eligible for unreduced Social Security benefits when reaching the required age for Social Security retirement.

The Optional Retirement Plan (ORP) is a defined contribution plan provided by a private carrier for academic and unclassified employees of institutions of higher education.

Whether you are a member of the Regular Plan, Plan A, or Plan B, TRSL offers you a variety of benefits. This area of our website describes the main components of TRSL's benefits.
